Rodri, one of the favorites to compete for the Ballon D’Or in 2024, did not have a smooth start to life in Manchester. For the first few months of Etihad Stadium stint, he had to maintain a long-distance relationship with girlfriend Laura.

Talking to The Player’s Tribune Football Rodri gave an insight into how difficult talking to her was, especially with teammates around. The Spaniard singled out Sergio Aguero and Nicolas Otamendi in his confession, stating how they would make fun “not just for” his clothes, but because he would FaceTime Laura after getting on the team bus following games. “Since I’m a footballer and she’s a doctor, we had to get used to being long-distance for many years.”

Rodri revealed that he would try talking to her after every game, and it was fine when they had won (which was presumably, most of the times). But when Manchester City lost, his reaction whilst on call with Laura would annoy several players – Aguero and Otamendi in particular. He added,

“I had no filter. When I speak to my missus, it’s like my brain flips back to being in uni… Everyone with their heads down all depressed, and I’d be talking loudly, saying ‘yeah we were a bit sh*t”

Aguero and Otamendi would call Rodri out. “They said, ‘man, you can’t be talking like that on the bus! Pep can hear you!” Rodri, however, did not care.

Rodri is a Ballon D’Or candidate, but back when he was young, he chose a path many modern pros don’t; he went to university. There, he met Laura, and they both started liking each other, before falling in love.

Born in Madrid, Rodri played for Villareal’s youth team before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2018. He spent a season at the Metropolitano, before Manchester City came swooping, and that’s where his relationship took a hard hit.

Yes, Rodri aspired to be a successful footballer, who could not turn down the opportunity to play for a Premier League giant. But Laura too, wanted to be a surgeon, so she could not leave her studies behind.

Thankfully for them, the rough patch passed, and today, they spend more time together.
