Angel Di Maria, in his recent Netflix documentary, stated that Louis van Gaal was his worst coach of all time. He joins a long list of Argentine players and fans, who have publicly show their disdain towards the Dutch manager. But why do people from Argentina not like him?
In the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Argentina headed into its quarter-final match against Netherlands with some extra zest, and targeted animosity towards Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal. It wasn’t a rivalry that formed the day before, but something that stemmed from several years ago.
Eight-time Ballon D’Or winner Lionel Messi led the Argentine celebrations in their victory over Netherlands that night. He stood in front of the opponent’s bench, put his hands on his ears, taunting the coach. Cold, according to many, but why was it necessary?
To answer that question, one has to look back at the 2002 season when Van Gaal returned to FC Barcelona. Juan Roman Riquelme, regarded as one of the greatest playmakers of all time was a hero of the Argentine national team also joined the Catalan club. Van Gaal, however, did not seem to appreciate him.

Van Gaal immediately referred to him as a political signing, and publicly criticized him almost every single week until he left at the end of the season.
Argentina fans started disliking Van Gaal then, but it only grew in the ears to follow.
