The 11th season of the Indian Super League kicked off last week, with 13 teams—one more than in 2023/24—competing for glory. For Indian fans, the coming months will be filled with hope and excitement, and FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez has high expectations for his club. However, when it comes to the long-term future of the ISL, the Spaniard is less optimistic.
Before Goa’s season opener against Jamshedpur, Marquez commented on the state of ISL teams, suggesting that while they are called ‘clubs,’ they function more like franchises.
“ISL teams are not clubs, they have owners,” Marquez said as per All India Football on X (formerly Twitter). “When the owners say stop, let’s see what happens.”
The FC Goa head coach is not sure about the sustainability of the clubs as they are owned by corporates.

“I’m very optimistic about this season of FC Goa, but I’m not very optimistic about the continuity of the ISL,” the 56-year-old added.
Marquez, who was recently announced as the head-coach of the Indian men’s football team, also stated that changing ’14-15 players’ in a team ahead of every season reflects a problem in the system. “We can speak for 1000 hours about it.”
Marquez’s statements can be backed by what happened to several ISL teams in the past.

The ISL is unrecognizable from its beginnings in 2014. Back then, retired stars like Diego Forlán, Roberto Carlos, and Robert Pirès were brought out of retirement to participate, and the league had a certain glamour attached to it, with Bollywood celebrities in the stands, giving it more of an ‘IPL-like’ atmosphere.
That wasn’t the plan, however. Soon, the league shifted to a more club-oriented approach, with longer seasons and a greater focus on football rather than glamor. Marquez’s concerns, though, stem from the commitment of team owners.
ISL teams have faced similar issues before, with two of the league’s original clubs, Delhi Dynamos and FC Pune City, becoming defunct in 2019. Issues with funding, management and a lack of interest from owners contributed to its demises.
In 2023, many feared Hyderabad FC might meet the same fate, as financial troubles led to a significant amount of unpaid salaries, affecting both players and staff. Fortunately, the BC Jindal Group stepped in and acquired the club ahead of this season, aiming to steer it away from bankruptcy and secure its future.
