AS Roma sacked Daniele De Rossi earlier this week in a move that surprised many. But his compatriot and fellow Giallorossi legend Francesco Totti saw it coming from a long way away.
In January 2024, Jose Mourinho was sacked by the AS Roma board as the team faced the risk of missing out on a European spot for the 2024/25 season. Daniele De Rossi stepped in, and under his leadership, Roma’s fortunes quickly turned around, resulting in a sixth-place finish.
De Rossi was rewarded with a three-year contract extension and entered the current season aiming to help Roma take the next big step: qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

Unfortunately for Roma, the season went off to a horrible start. Just three points from the opening four games was proof enough for the top brass to conclude it was time to move on from De Rossi. It shocked Italian football to the core, and most felt he should have gotten more time to steady the ship.
Totti, however, said this would happen six days ago. According to Italian Football TV, the former Roma captain said, “De Rossi risks not making it all the way. He’ll be the scape goat, it happened to Mourinho.”
Totti suggested that Mourinho’s problems on the pitch with getting results for Roma had more to do with the backroom’s troubles.
