The Madrid Derby – one of the fiercest rivalries in Spain involving Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, with the latter spending the majority of its existence in the shadows of its neighbors. Tensions almost always reach a fever pitch during these games, but sometimes, fans cross the lines, as evidenced by the scenes at the Civitas Metropolitano on Sunday.
Real Madrid was leading 1-0, when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois – a former Atletico player – decided to celebrate in front of the club’s ultras. They did not take it well and started throwing things at the Belgian.

Courtois, smiling, informed referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer before heading to his goalpost to retrieve an object thrown onto the pitch. It turned out to be a lighter, which some had mistaken for a vape (a smoking device).
Ferrer asked the stadium announcer to let the Metropolitano crowd know that the game would be suspended in case they did it again, and well, just seconds later, someone from behind Courtois’ post threw something.
Rumors after the game suggested that someone had thrown a knife at Courtois, but this was incorrect. However, El Chiringuito reported that the fan who threw the lighter did carry a knife into the stadium—a bizarre and troubling fact, given that no one should be allowed to bring a dangerous object like that into the ground.

Referee Busquets Ferrer asked the Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone to calm his fans down. The Argentine, with a pleading expression, urged his fans to not do something foolish, that could spoil the entire game.

Simeone actually asking for Courtois to face some kind of punishment.

However, all the media could talk about post-game was what happened with Courtois. Surprisingly, both Simeone and Koke blamed the Real Madrid keeper, insisting that it was his celebration which provoked the fans’ behavior.
It is yet to be seen if Real Madrid will take any legal action against its city rivals.
