Arsenal interim coach delighted with Juventus victory in the UW

Mariona Caldentey celebrates after making it 3-0 for Arsenal against Juventus at the UWCL

Arsenal’s start to the 2024/25 season was rocky, with manager Jonas Eidevall resigning early in the campaign. However, things now appear more stable, and interim coach Renee Slegers expressed her delight following a flawless away performance against Juventus.

Arsenal entered the game as clear favorites and looked the better side from the start. Juventus, though, put up a strong fight, keeping the scoreline to a narrow 1-0 deficit by halftime.

In the second half, Arsenal raised the tempo, and the breakthrough came in the 75th minute. Stina Blackstenius made it 2-0, and just five minutes later, Mariona Caldentey added a third. Caitlin Foord then capped off the win with a fourth goal in the 87th minute.

“We have four different goalscorers and the players up top are performing really well, but I don’t want to take out the goalkeeper, our back four and our two sixes as well,” Slegers said (to Arsenal.com), as she praised her entire team for the all-round display.

Slegers also gave the traveling Arsenal fans their flowers, as despite being in Turin, playing away in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, they were louder than the home Juventus supporters for the most part. “I could see them, I could hear them and I’m sure the players also heard them during the games. I think it’s massive… it’s so impressive how much they support us and I think it gives us a couple of extra percentages in the games, I really do,” she added.

Arsenal’s win over Juventus puts them in a strong position to qualify for the UWCL quarterfinals. They currently sit second in their group behind Bayern Munich, the only team in Europe to have defeated them so far.
