Daniele De Rossi took charge of AS Roma in 2024, which brought an end to Jose Mourinho’s time in charge of the Giallorossi. At first, it felt like a good move, with De Rossi turning the tides and guiding Roma to a Europa League spot. The 24/25 season, however, has seen De Rossi’s men have a woeful start, whereas Mourinho is creating shockwaves in Istanbul with Fenerbahçe.

AS Roma drew 1-1 away to Genoa on Sunday, conceding a goal to Koni De Winter in the sixth minute of stoppage time at the Luigi Ferraris. The result dropped them to 16th in the Serie A standings.

While it’s still early in the season, a loss and three draws in the opening four games is not the return a club fighting for a Champions League spot would hope for.

Mourinho was sacked by Roma midway through last year’s campaign. After various rumors linking him to different clubs and national team jobs around the world, the ‘Special One’ took charge of Fenerbahçe in Istanbul.

AS Roma fans and José Mourinho had a special connection. Many shed tears when the former Chelsea boss was sacked, as their UEFA Conference League win from just over two years ago was not forgotten by the Curva Sud faithful.

While results were not going Mourinho’s way and Roma was in danger of missing out on European places when he was dismissed, his struggles often involve more than just ‘poor tactics’—as (a lot of) Manchester United and Tottenham fans would attest.

It’s impossible to say whether Mourinho would have turned things around for Roma, but the 61-year-old’s cult following and brilliance have now found a new home in Turkey.

Fenerbahçe takes on Galatasaray next Saturday at 10:30 PM IST in what promises to be an exciting clash. So far, Mourinho’s side leads the Turkish Super Lig with 13 points from five games, one point ahead of Galatasaray.
