In 2022, Erik ten Hag’s fallout with Cristiano Ronaldo became one of the biggest topics in the football community. Ronaldo felt the Dutch manager had ‘disrespected’ him and claimed he lacked appreciation for him. Two years later, Steve McLaren insists Ten Hag was right in how he handled Ronaldo.
Ten Haag, after becoming manager of United, demoted Ronaldo to the bench. Publicly, he kept saying Ronaldo was an important member of the squad but refrained from giving him a full 90 minutes. This came despite the fact that the five-time Ballon D’Or winner was their top scorer the previous season.
There were times when Ronaldo was asked to warm-up, only for Ten Hag to send him back to the bench, or bring him on in the dying embers of the game.
“Ten Hag came in with set standards,” McLaren said to The Telegraph. “Set rules. Set way of playing. And if you didn’t run, you didn’t play.”
The Jamaica boss added that Dutch people are ‘rigid’ in general, which is why Ten Hag refused to change his system to accommodate Ronaldo. “He knew that was what was needed. There could be no flexibility, no way the players could maneuver,” he added.

In December 2022, Ronaldo appeared for an interview with Piers Morgan, a television journalist known for his hot, bold and controversial takes. Ronaldo ‘spilled a lot of beans’ on the situation at Manchester United, and revealed that the facilities at Carrington (United’s training ground) were outdated and subpar.
Ronaldo also shocked the world when he said he did not respect Ten Hag because of the lack of respect the boss showed him. For a player of his stature, he felt he was being mistreated.

On the other hand, Ronaldo knew what he had done. Just a few weeks later, Manchester United announced his departure and he completed a move to Al Nassr of the Saudi Pro League.
Majority of the Manchester United fanbase felt that Ronaldo was in the wrong, as did Steve McLaren. But Ten Hag not bringing results in to match the lofty expectations of the Old Trafford faithful swayed the community in Ronaldo’s favor as time passed.
Ten Hag continues to be under pressure, as Manchester United drew with his former team FC Twente 1-1 in the first round of the Europa League League Stage.
