Manchester City’s new signing, Vivianne Miedema, scored on her return to the Emirates Stadium in the opening match of the Women’s Super League, marking an emotional homecoming for the Dutch star.
Before the game, Miedema received a warm ovation from the Arsenal fans, and even when she beat Manuela Zinsberger with a deflected strike, the home crowd still showed their appreciation.
During her seven years with Arsenal, Miedema netted 125 goals, cementing her status as a club icon. Unsure of how she’d be welcomed back on Sunday, she was ultimately pleased with the reception.

“I’m really happy with the reception I got from the fans and from all the other girls,” she said as quoted by The Guardian.
“Coming back for the first time is a difficult thing to do,” she added. “It’s the first time you’re coming back home to the place where you’ve been for seven years, so it’s not easy, it’s not like any other normal game…”
Miedema did not celebrate after scoring, which wasn’t surprising, as she has built a reputation for being calm on the pitch, often avoiding overly exuberant celebrations even after scoring.

On Sunday, Arsenal and Manchester City played out a 2-2 draw in the Premier League, which had its own headlines and drama. But the WSL season opener certainly didn’t disappoint either.
Miedema was the focal point of the game, leveling the score at 1-1 after Frida Maanum’s eighth-minute strike. Jess Park put Manchester City ahead in the 58th minute, and it looked like the visitors might take all three points until Beth Mead equalized in the 81st minute.
After the game, Miedema admitted that she was once again enjoying football at her best, following a few injury-riddled years at Arsenal. She left the club on a free transfer to join City in hopes of rediscovering her love for the game, and so far, things seem to be going well in that regard.
“You could see on the pitch at times that I’m back to being old me, and I can spread some passes and score some goals, and I think that’s the only thing I need to focus on right now and keep on going,” she said.

Both Manchester City and Arsenal are expected to be title contenders in the WSL this season, and an opening-week clash between the two was a fitting way to kick things off. However, they will have to contend with Chelsea as well, as the defending champions look to make it two titles in a row.
