One-season wonder, some said when Mohamed Salah lit up the Premier League in 2017/18, scoring 32 goals and winning the Golden Boot. Now in his ninth season with the Reds, Salah is still at the top and is quite possibly having the best season of his career to date.
With 16 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League, Salah has been one of the spearheads in Arne Slot’s system and is one of the main reasons why Liverpool sat atop the table on Christmas day.
It’s safe to say that Mo Salah has already established himself as one of the greatest players in Premier League history, but just how good is his goalscoring record?
Salah has a total of 173 Premier League goals in 280 games. Interestingly, not all of these came since he joined Liverpool, as he scored 2 during his brief stint with Chelsea in the 2014/15 season.
When can Mo Salah become Premier League top scorer?
Salah’s name will most certainly be in the headlines in the coming weeks as he is set to eclipse the total goal tally of some huge Premier League legends.
He is just two goals away from passing Thierry Henry, who is at 175. The next player in his sights will be Frank Lampard with 177. These are two players Salah will most certainly pass this season, and in the next years, there are more to follow.
Sergio Aguero is at 184, and Salah can certainly pass the former Manchester City striker next season, provided he stays with Liverpool.
The Egyptian’s contract with the Merseyside-based club runs out at the end of the 2024/25 season, and although the vast majority of the fanbase wants him to stay, there are reports of owners FSG being hesitant about offering him the terms he feels he deserves.
As such, his final goal tally at the end of the current campaign could be his final. But if he stays, not only is he expected to surpass Aguero, but he could cross many more on the list.
The top scorers of the Premier League ahead of Mo Salah currently are:
- Alan Shearer (260)
- Harry Kane (213)
- Wayne Rooney (208)
- Andrew Cole (187)
- Sergio Aguero (184)
- Frank Lampard (177)
- Thierry Henry (175)
- Mohamed Salah (173)
Salah is just 32 years old, which means he still has quite a few years of prime performance left. Normally, he is also a very fit player who rarely struggles with injuries, making it unlikely he will sit out a lot of time if he remains in the Premier League.
Salah Compared with other Premier League top scorers
Arguably the most competitive league in the world, the Premier League has seen many great goalscorers who have consistently found the back of the net over the years.
But very few have been as consistent as Salah. In a graph prepared by the Eleventh Minute (with data sourced from Transfermarkt), Salah’s instant impact when it comes to goalscoring is clearly visible. There were subsequent seasons where he scored fewer goals, but overall, his form has rarely dipped.
Even the great Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer (both of whom had 30+ goal seasons) had some seasons where they scored less than 10 goals. Salah didn’t, barring his campaign with Chelsea, where he rarely featured.
The only player who could be considered as consistent in front of goal as Salah was Harry Kane, the Premier League’s second-highest goalscorer of all time. Admittedly, had Kane not departed for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga last season, he might have left as the top scorer of all time.
