Story of the Premier League Footballer Who Went On to Sell Condoms

The life of a professional footballer is not forever. No matter how talented you are, age inevitably catches up, and fitness levels begin to decline. Unless you manage to become a wealthy and savvy millionaire, you’ll need to start thinking about how to make money after your playing days are over. This is why so many footballers turn to coaching or punditry, while some venture into business—and even fewer into more unconventional industries, like the condom business.

Faustino Asprilla, though not one of the most famous players in history, last played for a professional football club in 2004. After his playing career officially ended five years later, he didn’t land a job in the sport, but made a special appearance during one of Newcastle United’s games at St. James’ Park, where he was received with a warm reception.

Between 1996 and 1998, he dazzled the Magpies’ faithful, who remembered his contributions to the club. But in 2016, he came to the news again, for very different reasons.

Asprilla started selling flavored condoms, and built strong wealth off of it. In an interview with La Gazetta dello Sport, the former Colombian international said, “I have a farm, I sell sugar cane to the Colombian government and through an advertising campaign I sell condoms.”

Asprilla added, “You know, s*x has always been important to me. I am Asprilla: lots of s*x, no rules and pure life.” This explains Asprilla’s success in the condom business.

The name of the ex-Premier League star’s brand, Tino, grabbed the headlines after the Covid 19 pandemic hit Colombia (also the rest of the world) in 2020. Addressing what he felt was an important issue, Asprilla had 3.5 million condoms in stock to meet what was described as a ‘global shortage’.
