Germany’s UEFA Nations League campaign was off to a 5-star start, thanks to a resounding 5-0 victory over Hungary at the Merkur Spiel Arena in Dusseldorf. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann, however, found complacency creep in, and asked for more from his players.

In an interview with (reported by Mia San Mia) after the game, Nagelsmann pointed out that Germany missed plenty of open chances in the early stages, something he suggested could have bit them back, had they not taken control. The ex-Bayern Munich boss was happy that they dominated the rest of the game, but called for a better ‘killer instinct’. He said-

“We should have scored more goals in the first half. We should develop a killer instinct to decide games earlier. The chemistry in the team is there and as long as that’s the case we can always improve”

Led by new captain Joshua Kimmich, Germany entered the game knowing very well that it was the start of a new era. Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos, Ilkay Gundogan and Thomas Muller — long and faithful servants of Die Manschaft — retired after the Euros. It was time for Nagelsmann and Germany to look towards a bright future, and aim for their first international trophy win since the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Germany was able to do just that, beating Hungary, who never looked comfortable at any point, fairly convincingly.

Niclas Füllkrug found the back of the net on the 26th minute, netting Germany’s first goal of the night. Florian Wirtz set up a cross, which David Raum received and sent it the way of Jamal Musiala, who set Füllkrug up for an open goal.

For the rest of the first half, however, Germany missed plenty of chances, several of them falling in the hands of Arsenal’s Kai Havertz.

In the 56th minute, Musiala scored, after a blistering counter attack which started from a Hungary corner gone wrong for the Magyars. The Bayern star combined with Wirtz to assist him for the third goal of the match, before Aleksandar Pavlovic made it goal number four, thanks to another assist by the former.

In the 80th minute of the game, the Havertz won a penalty which he converted seamlessly, to cap off a perfect night for the players, and the 54,000 fans who had traveled to the stadium to watch them play.

Nagelsmann’s criticism, however, is indicator that he won’t be satisfied with just this. He wants more, and that mainly includes chances not going to waste. Germany could have won with even more goals, and put the game to bed before half-time.

Hungary couldn’t make them rue their missed-chances, but on a bigger stage, against a bigger team, lady luck may not be so kind to Nagelsmann’s men.
