Ruud van Nistelrooy was announced as Manchester United’s interim boss after Erik ten Hag lost his job following a dismal start to the 23/24 campaign, and it is safe to say that the club’s former striker has done a good job in steadying the ship. Although United have a new manager in Ruben Amorim joining on November 11, it seems as though internally, they want van Nistelrooy to stay in some capacity.
Van Nistelrooy’s record so far is modest. In the three games he has managed, the Dutchman has won two—against Leicester and PAOK—and drawn one against Chelsea in the Premier League.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana however, revealed why he wants van Nistelrooy to remain a part of the coaching staff.
“He has so much experience. He’s been amazing since he’s been here. We’ve only had him a few days as a head coach, which is different, but he’s been fantastic. The players are happy,” Onana said to TNT (quoted by The Athletic).
The Cameroonian, however, acknowledged that it wasn’t up to him or any other Manchester United player to keep Van Nistelrooy. While he would have loved for him to stay on as coach, he respects the board’s decision to appoint Amorim.
Manchester United fans were thrilled, especially with Van Nistelrooy’s third game in charge—a UEFA Europa League match against Greek side PAOK on Thursday. After three consecutive draws, the Red Devils claimed their first European win of the season, thanks to an Amad Diallo brace and a clean sheet from Onana.

More than just the victory, United looked cohesive, showing a hint of tactical fluidity against PAOK—something largely missing under Ten Hag for much of this season.
Van Nistelrooy’s next and final game in charge will be against Leicester City this Sunday. Following the match, Amorim, who has already bid farewell to Sporting Lisbon fans, will assume the role, with the international break providing a transition period.
