‘Wazza’ Wayne Rooney was the star of the show in the Manchester United Legends game against Celtic’s Legends at Old Trafford on Saturday. Although the Red Devils lost on penalties, Rooney stole the spotlight, scoring United’s first free-kick at Old Trafford in more than two years.
United fans had something to cheer for at home on Saturday as familiar faces — Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, and Michael Carrick, to name a few — laced up their boots for a charity game, with ticket sales supporting the Manchester United Foundation.

About five minutes before half-time, United won a free-kick near the edge of the box — familiar territory for the 38-year-old, who had scored countless times from similar positions during his playing days at Man Utd.
The Englishman paused, took aim, and struck a belter — right into the top-right corner, hitting the back of the net. Old Trafford erupted, and Rooney celebrated in a United jersey again, possibly for the last time ever.
Celtic equalized in the second half, courtesy of a Gary Hooper goal, which came on the back of a brilliant attempt made by Stiliyan Petrov who hit the cross-bar. After full-time, the scoreline was 1-1, with penalties ultimately deciding the tie in Celtic’s favor, but the headlines all over the world? Rooney was back.

Interestingly, Rooney scored a free-kick (along with two other goals) in his first-ever game for United — a resounding 6-2 win over Fenerbahçe in the UEFA Champions League. He also provided an assist, earning the Man of the Match award and introducing himself to Manchester United fans in spectacular fashion.

He went on to win 16 trophies for the club between 2004 and 2017, including five Premier League titles. He left Old Trafford as a legend, to play for boyhood club Everton, before leaving for the US, to play for DC United in 2018. He returned to England in 2020, to play for Derby County for one season, before hanging up his boots.
Rooney took up the role of manager at Derby thereafter, and after two difficult seasons, hopped across the pond to DC again, before going through a torrid and short spell at Birmingham City. Currently, he is the head coach of Plymouth Argyle.
Much has been said about Rooney’s fitness since he retired, but the sacrifices he made during his playing career — staying fit and ready to give his all for Manchester United — mean he’s earned the right to live his retirement on his terms. And who says Wazza doesn’t still have something left in the tank? He himself admitted that his ability with the ball at his feet never left. His free-kick against the Celtic old guard was true testament to that.
