WATCH- When Andres Iniesta Admitted to Being a Real Madrid Fan

For the longest time, it was hard to imagine Andrés Iniesta playing for any club other than Barcelona, the team he joined as a kid in 1996. However, history could have taken a very different turn had the Spaniard played for the club he originally supported—Real Madrid.

Iniesta represented Barcelona in 674 official games, scoring 57 goals and recording 135 assists. One interesting and rather surprising stat associated with him is his record of receiving zero red cards, even after he left Barca.

As a child, however, Iniesta was a fan of Real Madrid. It’s unclear how long this lasted, but the Spaniard himself has admitted it, as shown in videos circulating on X (formerly Twitter).

“I was a die-hard fan of Madrid,” Iniesta said in his younger days.

Presumably, by the time of this statement, Iniesta had already joined Barca, hence the use of ‘was.’ But football might have taken a different path had Iniesta joined La Fábrica instead of La Masia.

As is common knowledge, Iniesta did not join Madrid and went on to become one of the biggest legends in Barcelona’s history. He faced Real Madrid on numerous occasions, consistently making life difficult for Los Blancos defenders over the years.

However, when the 40-year-old announced his retirement on October 8, Real Madrid released a statement to honor their once fierce competitor.

“Real Madrid C. F., its President, and its Board of Directors would like to express their recognition, admiration, and affection for one of the biggest legends of Spanish and world football,” the statement read.

The Club’s website also recalled Iniesta’s World Cup-winning goal from the 2010 final in South Africa, describing it as a moment that will “forever remain in the memory of every Spanish fan.”

“Real Madrid would like to wish him and his family the best of luck in this new chapter of his life,” the statement concluded.
