Jadon Sancho returned to Manchester United at the end of the 2023/24 season after spending six months on loan at Borussia Dortmund. However, just weeks later, he made the move to Chelsea, the club he supported as a child. But why did Sancho make the switch? And is it a permanent transfer or just a loan?
Unfortunately for Erik ten Hag, he hasn’t managed to get rid of Sancho from the Manchester United books just yet. But he will soon. Why “get rid”? Because it was a rift with the United boss that led to Sancho being fully sidelined at Old Trafford.
The former Manchester City youngster joined United in 2021 with high expectations. However, things didn’t quite go his way as he struggled to adapt. His first manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, was sacked that same year, and then Ten Hag took over—someone with whom Sancho never really clicked.
He was never a favorite under Ten Hag, who brought in his “favorite” Antony from Ajax and chose to play him ahead of Sancho. Tensions peaked in 2023 when a disagreement between Sancho and Ten Hag resulted in him being dropped from the first team.
Sancho was relegated to training alone, away from the squad, and a move away seemed inevitable. So, in early January, he joined Borussia Dortmund on loan.

Jadon Sancho’s loan spell at Borussia Dortmund gave him a much-needed return to competitive first-division football, though it didn’t quite match the heights of his successful stint at the Westfalenstadion from 2017 to 2021.
Sancho managed just 6 goal contributions in 21 games but played well enough to remind Ten Hag and the Premier League that he was still a top player.
Upon his return to Manchester United, Sancho trained with the first team and looked confident ahead of the new season. He even featured in United’s penalty shootout defeat to City at Wembley—unfortunately, Sancho was the one who missed a decisive penalty.
