After a dazzling Euro 2024 campaign, interest in Nico Williams came from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including La Liga giants Barcelona. However, the club’s financial woes made many question the possibility of a move falling thorough.

A few matches into the La Liga season, it was revealed that Williams would stay at Athletic Club, much to the delight of the San Mames faithful. FC Barcelona, meanwhile, signed Dani Olmo for $70 million (a reported figure).

Considering Barcelona’s existing difficulties with registering Olmo, and the fact that they had due payments from previous transfers, Williams’ move materializing from a financial point of view did not make much sense, especially considering the fact that the Spaniard wouldn’t have come cheap.

Fans made their peace with that, and the Catalan club enjoyed a good start to the season — three wins in three games before the International break.

However, as per Sporting Director Deco, money wasn’t the issue. He insisted that Barcelona was satisfied with the quality it had at its disposal.

Speaking to the media during the international break, Deco cited ‘level’ as the roadblock. “Today, we have Raphina, Ferran, the return of Ansu, Lamine and players like Fermin or Olmo who can play there,” he stated.

“To bring someone in, they had to be of a very high level,” he added.

Deco dismissed Barca’s inability to sign Nico Williams, and labeled it as a matter of choice. However, he admitted that they did speak to the 22-year-old’s entourage over the summer break.

However they had ‘different priorities’, because of which they decided not to invested in the talented youngster, who is a target of several big clubs all over the continent.

For now, Williams continues with Athletic Club as the Basque team looks to improve on its fifth-place finish in La Liga last season. Unfortunately, things have not gone of to a merry start for the Zuri-Gorriak. In four games, they have just four points, and sit 13th in the table.

Upon the resumption of the club-season next weekend, Athletic Club travel to Las Palmas, who are 18th.
